The Great DIY Debate
There is something special about a DIY (or do-it-yourself) wedding. They ooze creativity and can add a very personal touch to your wedding day. It's no surprise with everyone's concern about the economy that DIY weddings are becoming very popular right now. Plus DIY ensures you have a wedding like no one elses!
People are choosing to create their own centrepieces, write their own vows, make their own bouquets and design their own stationery suites. By making or designing items for your special day you are automatically inserting you into your wedding. It can be an amazing experience seeing all your hard work come together.
However, DIY isn't for everyone and I think it's important to consider a few things before you head down the rewarding but ambitious DIY path. For some people, it's the perfect addition to their day but for others it can cause unecessary stress.
I came across the below DIY rules on Every Last Detail which I thought summarised it all perfectly:
Don’t take on DIY projects unless you like to craft and are creative
Don’t DIY unless you have some willing and able friends and family to help you
Don’t DIY if you do not have the time to put into the projects you plan
Don’t wait until the last 2 months to DIY, spread them out throughout your engagement
Don’t DIY if you (or someone outside the bridal party) are not an organised person
Now one of the most important things that I had, that I make sure everyone who wants to DIY their wedding has, is someone (outside the bridal party) to take charge come wedding day. When you DIY your wedding, it is easy to get over involved and want to be in complete control of all the details. However, on the day you need to be fully in the moment of getting married to the person you love. You can't be worrying about whether the lanterns are in the right place or the mason jars are filled correctly. That is my number one tip and one I strongly recommend to all brides.
Wedding planning should be a positive experience. Whatever path you choose to follow, ensure you leave yourself an appropriate amount of time to complete your projects. You want to make sure you absolutely minimise the stress in weeks leading up to your big day. It should be a fun time that you look back on with fond memories for years to come.
